Notes

Series Four (Split Seconds) is dated 1987 to 1988 on Wikipedia, which we follow. Wikipedia names the mask New Backlash; one collector guide lists it as Backlash.

Afterburner is a Split Seconds vehicle. Its road form is a dragster, which splits into two vehicles: a small jet plane and an elevated turret. A collector guide describes the toy as a dragster and stealth jet with a cannon launcher.

The Split Seconds line was the fourth Kenner series and followed the end of the cartoon. Every vehicle in it separates into two craft, and the packaging included a second, translucent figure called the Computer Image, which represents a hologram of the driver piloting the second half. Afterburner’s driver is Dusty “Powderkeg” Hayes. The listed features are fold-down wings, a sting bomb and a pivoting cannon launcher.

Hayes’s mask is New Backlash, which produces a holographic clone as well as the kinetic blast of the original Backlash. In this wave the mask creates the double that the second figure represents.

Afterburner did not appear in the cartoon. Hayes’s earlier toys are Gator in Series One and Billboard Blast in Series Three.
